While working through the piles of work thrown at me during the last few months, in a moment of clarity I suddenly realised: ‘Oh shit, I still have an editorial about Mac thingies’.
Yes dear reader, sometimes you just don’t remember things you were ought to do. Especially when they’re not on top of your priorities list. Which is why I haven’t written a lot over here yet.
Anywho, let’s just get on with it. I’m still on my agonizing road to Macness, and as you may have noticed on my progress meter: the road is still very long. Unfortunately my new internship isn’t a paid one, so my wallet stays pretty much empty right now. Maybe I’ll find a nice job during the summer…
I’d like to talk to you about the iPhone. Another Apple thingy I’m considering to buy. I already have an iPod Touch, but the limitations I’m having from this thing compared to the iPhone are starting to bug me. If you’re on the road and you need to look something up, you basically have to wardrive for Wi-Fi networks which just happen to be unlocked or free. And contrary to common belief, there aren’t a lot of those around anymore.
Of course I know the iPhone isn’t perfect: You can’t run two apps at the same time, it’s got a lousy camera without flash, Safari crashes basically every time you’re trying to load every single page on the internet, and it’s not like it can make coffee or something. It’s just that I like the apps on the iPhone (you could even turn it into a satnav device!), and I still haven’t found any good competitors. I mean yes, HTC is getting close, but it’s just not the same, and not really worth the investment.
One major thing that’s holding me back is the compulsory 2-year subscription plan. I’m more like a prepaid, topped-up person: I almost never call someone and I’m certainly not a texting addict either. I can do months without needing to top-up my phone. I just need some unlimited internet access, which my current provider is happy to provide on my prepaid plan.
So paying money every month for minutes I’m not likely ever going to use, seems like an incredible waste to me. Wouldn’t you agree?
‘Why don’t you just call more people’ you’d say. Well, I just don’t see myself call more people just because I need to use up my minutes. Somehow that kind of logic isn’t working for me.
I can imagine that phone companies are making millions of dollars/euro’s each year just from unused minutes. Call me frugal, but I’m not willing to give them any more than they deserve.
More about this next time!

Re: The agonising road to Macness - iPhone thingies (1)
I've had a MDA Vario, which was basically a HTC with a different name
The damn thing didn't work anymore after 2 years so unfortunately I couldn't continue using it with a pre-paid card. I even tried a new battery but no luck.
I can probably buy a 2nd hand iPhone from Rens this summer, or whenever he has a new one. I'm patient. I'm planning to use it pre-paid also. But I need internet! So could you tell me which company lets you have prepaid + internet?
Lovely column btw

At the beginning of the month I have 150 minutes and at the end of the month I still have 150 minutes
. But if you want to know my internet use. Go and get 4000000000000000000000000 sheets of paper for the bill
(I am so happy to have unlimited internet access).
@Rosana: you will get my iPhone as soon as I have a new one. I hope it's in June.
